A note as we get started. Please remember that the version of the BeerBug I am using is not the final retail version. This is an early build so it’s very likely improvements will be made before it’s released. Also, the final BeerBug will use WiFi connectivity, mine is a Bluetooth version.
If you haven’t seen part 1 of the review here’s a link.
With fermentation under way the primary reason to measure specific gravity is to see how fermentation is progressing and to determine when it has finished.
So how did the BeerBug fare in accomplishing these tasks, and how did it compare to using a hydrometer to do so?

As you may have heard Ben Pugh, a member of Bluff City Brewers and Memphis Brewers Association is starting his own brewery in Jackson, TN. The pub will serve his brews and pizza by Rock N Dough Pizza!
If you’ve tried Ben’s brews at our meetings or elsewhere you know just how great this place will be.
So in the spirit of helping a great homebrewer go pro and spreading tasty craft beers to every part of our state check out Eclectic Ale’s Kickstarter page. They are offering some great incentives to backers and the result will be well worth the investment!

Some of you may have seen the BeerBug Kickstarter last year. The concept was a digital hydrometer that would connect to your computer or phone and deliver real time specific gravity and temperature readings. Their software would make nice graphs for you and calculate your ABV on the fly.
Being the tech geek that I am and never having entirely approved of wasting beer on hydrometer readings this concept appealed to me greatly and I backed it. A couple months ago I received my BeerBug and dropped it into a beer I had sitting in the fermenter. That beer was almost done fermenting so I waited until after my vacation to use it with a full brew before I put any sort of impressions online.

The July 2013 BCBC meeting is this Thursday, July 18 7:00 pm, Central BBQ on Summer. If you have a “Grocery Store Brew” , bring it.
We’ve been trying to arrange a presentation from the Bartosch brothers of Wiseacre Brewery and maybe a tour, we almost had it worked out for this month but they’re still a “construction zone” and not ready for visitors. Maybe August or September.
It’s still up in the air but Kellan Bartosch may be able to speak to the club this month at Central BBQ (Summer Ave, 7:00 pm)
We’ll be announcing some brewing spots for festivals and events soon!
- Sat. Aug 3rd – National Mead Day – Mike usually has something at Mid South Malt.
- Sat. Aug 10 – Rock N Romp – Bridges Downtown, 2:00- 5:00 bring the kids.
- Aug Presentation – Trying to get Wiseacre.
- Sept’s Presentation: Hops Part 2, and/or Herb Beers.
- Oct Meeting – Fictional Beers.
See you Thursday

We are raffling a Keggle, which is a half barrel keg converted into a brew pot. Great for 10 gallon batches.
The price per tickets is $5. Not bad for a keggle!
Drawing date is to be determined, but you do not need to be present to win. Get tickets at any club meeting, or by using the button below (number can be selected after you click).

Congratulations to our very own Nick Vincent!
As is often the case our friends at FuzzyBrew said it better than I could:
Memphis homebrewer Nick Vincent is GABF bound.
Nick is the winner of the 2013 Boscos Pro Am, taking first place in the local competition with his Extracurricular Hoptivity IPA.
As the Pro Am winner, Nick, a member of the Bluff City Brewers & Connoisseurs, will get to brew his recipe on Boscos’ 7-barrel system, and his beer will go on tap at the brewpub this fall.
In addition, Nick will get to take a keg of his beer to Denver to compete in the 2013 Great American Beer Festival Pro Am. He’ll get an all-access pass to the festival fromBoscos and airfare provided by the homebrew club.
