Club News

We’re looking for people to participate in the “Grocery Store Brew” meeting in July. Give us a shout back if you want to brew.

The idea is to get creative. Do a small batch if you don’t want to risk a full batch. The only “rules” are to follow one of these options when brewing:

1.) You can use brewers yeast but everything else must come from the grocery store (some ingredient ideas: Oats, cereal, rice, grits, honey, bread yeast, bitter herbs or veg. fruit. )

2.) Alter a recipe by using any two of these items: Cap’n Crunch, Sweet Potatoes, Peanut Butter, Rice, Pickle Juice

Upcoming meetings:

May – Cold Fermentation – Jon Korneliussen

June – One Wort, Four Yeast – Matt Mulqueen and David McCormick

Don’t forget the October “Fictional Beers” meeting, some theme ideas are:

• Lord of the Rings inspired beer
• Harry Potter beer
• Gunslinger’s Graff from The Dark Tower series
• Star Wars theme
• Game of Thrones brew

Best of the Bluff schedule:

June – BotB – Lawnmower Beers
July – Grocery Store Brew
August – AHA – European Amber Lagers
September – No BotB but bring Herb Beers if you have them, they’ll go with our presentation
October – BotB – Fictional Beers

We’ll have news on the fall festivals soon and look for your chance to brew for the Aug. and Sept. Rock N Romp.

Mississippi Homebrew Legalization Bill Signed by Governor

March 19, 2013 by Nate Eklund

Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi signed SB 2183 into law today. As of July 1st homebrewers of Mississippi will be able to legally practice their hobby!

Of course the usual restrictions apply.  You must be 21 to brew beer, you can’t make more than 100 gallons/year (200 max per household) and you can’t sell your products.

FuzzyBrew’s latest adventure: Surf Brewery in Venture, CA

February 2, 2013 by Nate Eklund

FuzzyBrew brings us more tales of beer from far off lands.

If you ever visit the tasting room at Surf Brewery in Ventura, Calif., get the sampler. Five-ounce samples of your choice — on a mini surfboard, no less — ride the craft brew wave right into your belly! A “short board” gives you four tasters, while the “long board” comes with six, eight or even 10 pours of Surf beers.

2013 A Great Year for Brewing

December 20, 2012 by Jeff Kinzer

2013 is shaping up to be a great year for Memphis beer culture, with two new breweries opening (High Cotton Brewing, Memphis Made Brewing), Ghost River selling beer as fast as they can make it, and Budweiser of Memphis bringing in more Craft Beer, things are going to get fun real quick!

The BCBC have plans for 2013 too, we’re so excited we can’t hold them in any longer.

To begin, we’ve put together a full schedule of meeting presentations for 2013. The first six months are firm, we’re still finalizing a few presentations but I think things will fall into place.

Secondly, there will be numerous opportunities to sharpen your brewing skills. We’ll need people to brew for some of the meetings, July and October particularly. We’ll have festivals to brew for in the spring and fall, then there are other events like Rock N Romp, Project Green Fork and the MS Brew Movement.  And don’t forget our traditions like Homebrew Day and the monthly AHA and Best of The Bluff club only competitions.

By this time next year I bet you can say you’re a better brewer because of the information you’ve gotten from the club and by the practice you’ve had brewing for some of these “opportunities”.   I’m sure I will.
